From the Supermodel to the Socialite, the Pop Star to the Wild Child, frosted lips are for the girls who want to be famous. “Popping the lips with frosted lipstick – especially contoured with generous amounts of lip liner – was a 90s makeup craze,” says Terry Barber, M·A·C Creative Director of Makeup Artistry. “Not only was it cool but it was the ultimate trick to make your lips look dynamically fuller.”

Inspired by the iconic women who wore them in the 90s and early aughts, we’re spotlighting the top products and techniques that are as relevant today as they were 30 years ago. “Layering is the key to modern frost,” says Barber. “Essentially, it’s using a frosted lip colour in the same way that you would use a highlighter. It can be concentrated in the centre of the lips to create the illusion of volume or applied as a sheer coat across its entirety for something super luxurious.”

If you haven’t picked up a frosted lip product in years, some things do get better with age. “Chunky glitter lips have given way to fine metallic pearl which wraps itself around the contours of the lip and reflects the right amount of light,” says Barber, who created the four 90s makeup looks below. “You’re still getting the cool factor, but in a finish that’s way more beautifying and seamless.”
